Research Focus: Extrusion
Besides the range of suitable tasks for each machine, the geometry of the processing component, especially of the screw, is highly dependent of the product quality and throughput. On the basis of this, the research field “extrusion” of the KTP covers the theoretical description and design of the model as well as the production-oriented optimization of single and twin-screw extruders. To guarantee the practical transformation of the research results, simulation programs like “REX” for single screw extruders, SIGMA for twin-screw extruders and “RubberScrew” for rubber extruders have been developed. These programs make it possible to achieve a fast and reliable extruder design.
But the focus lies not only on the extruder itself. We also work on the optimization of gear pumps for extrusion applications and for extra-applications within the rubber processing. Further research activities within the field of extrusion are the description, calculation and simulation of cooling processes while extruding thermoplastic material.
Due to the influence of cooling processes on the quality of the end products, it is important for mechanical engineers and plant operators to analyze the cooling processes within the extrusion line. The simulation software “ScooP” allows to describe cooling processes in films and sheets with a practical orientation.
In the field of the extrusion of extra material bio-polymers and nanocomposites are separate fields. Here, applications in the field of the automobile industry are of importance.
